Treasury Yields Fall 10 Basis Points Despite Hot Producer Prices, and Gold Rebounds Above $4,148

The US 10-year Treasury yield dropped 10 basis points to 5.089% on Thursday, even though producer prices rose at their fastest monthly pace since March 2022. Gold gained more than 1% to $4,148 per ounce as a result. The day shows how the bond market, rather than the inflation headline, often sets the direction for gold in the short run. It also showed a shift in the group of buyers that had been absent a day earlier.

What the producer price report showed

According to FXStreet, the September Producer Price Index rose 6.3% year on year, well above the 5.3% forecast, driven largely by energy prices. Core producer inflation climbed to 5% from 4.8%, also above forecasts. Kitco's report on the same data put the monthly gain at 1.3%, with producer energy prices up 10.8% and gasoline up 20.3%. Producer prices measure what businesses pay for goods and services, and they often feed into consumer prices with a lag.

The report arrived one day after consumer prices rose 3.7% year on year, above forecasts, which had pushed gold to a five-day low of $4,073. Another inflation surprise would normally add pressure. Instead, investors had already priced in much of the shock, and attention moved to the bond market.

Why yields fell

The 10-year yield fell to 5.089% by the session close, down from the 5.079% level noted in FXStreet's earlier morning report, while the dollar index dropped 0.4% to 102.11, retreating from an 18-month high reached on Wednesday. FXStreet's morning report lists the 10-year at 5.079%, the 2-year at 4.745% and the 30-year at 5.42%, so yields fell across the curve. Kitco notes that the 10-year reached its lowest level in about three weeks, as selling in AI-linked technology stocks drove investors toward bonds.

Equity weakness was visible globally. Nasdaq futures fell about 1.2% and South Korea's Kospi dropped roughly 7.6%. When stocks fall sharply, money often flows into government bonds, which lowers yields. Lower yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold, and a weaker dollar makes it cheaper for buyers in other currencies. Both forces moved in gold's favour at once.

Fed odds shifted

Money markets now price about a 26% chance of a quarter-point hike at the 27 to 28 October meeting, compared to roughly 29% in Kitco's specific futures contract reading. The chance of a hike by December stands near 92%. Fed officials Mary Daly and Michelle Bowman said an immediate hike might not be necessary, which cooled October expectations even as the December path stayed firmly priced.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack struck a moderately hawkish tone, warning of a possible entrenched inflationary mindset, as noted in FXStreet's morning briefing. The FXStreet Fed Sentiment Index stood at 127.92, still well above the neutral level of 100.

The buyers TD Securities points to

TD Securities said trend-following funds were covering short positions, and that ETF inflows and central bank buying remain strong. The bank expects those flows to stay robust, especially between $4,000 and $4,100, and said in its words that these flows have ultimately offered strong support for gold. Short covering by momentum funds can lift prices quickly because the buying is mechanical and arrives all at once.

Central bank purchases and ETF inflows work differently. They are slower and less sensitive to daily price swings, and they tend to build a floor over weeks rather than moving the price in a single session. The combination of both types of demand around $4,100 is one reason the metal bounced after touching $4,073.

Technical map

Gold reached a weekly low of $4,073 on Wednesday and has recovered above $4,100. Buyers need to clear $4,200 to test the 100-day moving average near $4,245, with the 50-day average near $4,334 above that. Further resistance sits near $4,370. On the downside, support lies at $4,100, then $4,073, $4,035, $3,996, $3,959 and the yearly low of $3,941. Momentum indicators remain bearish but show signs of buying interest.

Other data and the next catalyst

September retail sales rose 0.8% on the month against a 0.3% forecast, although sales excluding autos and gasoline rose only 0.2%. Initial jobless claims came in at 199,000, slightly below the 200,000 forecast. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is due to speak at the IMF annual meetings in Bangkok on Friday, and traders will watch his language on the October meeting and on December.

What this means for physical holders

Gold sits about 26% below its January record of $5,598.58, yet it has absorbed a Fed rate increase, the highest 10-year yield since 2002 and a firm dollar without breaking its yearly low. That resilience reflects demand from central banks, ETFs and Asian physical buyers, all of which tend to step in near $4,000 to $4,100.
